Do you have skills in NB-IoT technology and RF cyber security and/or experience in applying ML techniques to cyber threat detection and mitigation? If so, we are seeking talented and motivated researchers to join the Communication Systems and Networks (CSN) research group at the University of Bristol on this specific topic within the UKRI/EPSRC Prosperity Partnership on Secure Wireless Agile Networks (SWAN).

If successful, you will be offered a Research Associate position through until January 2025, plus you may be able to apply for new opportunities within the group beyond the end date. This is a unique opportunity to advance your skills within the field of RF cyber security for NB-IoT devices.

What will you be doing?

You will be working within a pioneering research team working on creating secure wireless technology for future communications systems. You will also be part of the Smart Internet Lab, an initiative that builds on Bristol's strategic research in communications and digital technologies to create a hub for internet research.

Your responsibilities will embrace experimentally driven research in the following topics:

  • Application of ML/AI in the detection of RF cyber attacks for NB-IoT;
  • Application of Self-Organising Feature Maps (SOFMs) to aid decorrelation of devices from same manufacturing batch;
  • Development of other device identification techniques;
  • Embedding antenna and channel response in data sets by means of channel emulation;
  • Separation of device and channel characteristics;
  • Joint analysis of device and channel for rogue device detection.

You should apply if

  • You have a PhD or are shortly due to complete your PhD/have equivalent industrial experience;
  • A desire to develop your research profile to enhance your future opportunities in academia or industry;
  • An understanding of the RF Open Attack Surface;
  • A track record of innovative and creative research in the field of RF Cyber, physical device identification and characterisation.
